OOAKs! Be Creative!

Posted by helen on June 26, 2017

Someone told me her “Holy Grail” is the 2012 Paris Convention Doll  “La Belle Époque Barbie”.  I took a look at eBay’s listings, the prices are ranged from $850 to $1395.  I don’t think I’d pay that much for a doll

She does look better than the recent year’s Convention dolls.

Borrowing a IRL photo from Pinterest:

A Weekend Project to save $1395.

Barbie needs bright colors and bold patterns. here goes, we adopted one fun design from “Dolce & Gabbana 2015 Tropical Collections”

Zendaya at Met Gala 2017 :

Hope someday Barbie will make a presence at Met Gala, too.

Size Matters –shrinking doll heads

Posted by helen on April 27, 2017

I bought this doll for $14.99

Her head is much larger than my regular dolls: (she is in the center)

I decided to shrink her head with acetone.

After reading some bloggers’ posts online, I thought this is how I should do it:  Soak the doll head  in the acetone, the doll head would first blow up much bigger then shrink, you take the head out of the acetone after it shrinks to the size you want.

However, it didn’t happen this way.  After I soaked the head in Acetone, the head blew up  as big as an egg. but it stayed that way forever, it didn’t shrink,  her makeup were “gone with the acetone”, her head remained big.  A week has gone by, I could no longer wait, so I took it out and left it on my kitchen counter –then, magic happened, the head shrank! Perhaps it shrank too much,  now its smaller than a regular collectible doll’s head.  Also, the head is hardened– its as hard as a Silkstone doll’s head.

since the doll lost all her face paint, I had to repaint it–A job I don’t like

she probably has just killed a rabbit, so you see the blood on the sword:

Here she is with her fellow wonder woman, you can see the size differences:

Too much risk is involved with Acetone,  it may ruin the makeup, it may cause head split, it may damage the hair ( Kanekalon hair does not stand the test of Acetone),

So I don’t recommend it.

Well-suited…

Posted by helen on November 10, 2016

Thousands of people are protesting against the 2016 Election Results,  marching from Union Square to Trump Tower,  I decided not to go anywhere near Midtown Manhattan,  just to avoid the angry crowds.

Barbie’s all female-ticket  did not win the Presidency, so you will be seeing  “Barbie for President” again in  2020.  Don’t worry about her loss,  she has quickly recovered from Election Hangover and ready to move on.

I did not lose my sleep, either.  “Believe me”, the new president would NOT have any more impact on my life than Barbie’s Glue Heads have.

well-adjusted  & ready to face new challenges.

Wearing Red White & Blue,  she’s  a Patriotic Girl.

Ready to Work

Its hard to imagine the Trees will turn into green again when all you see is falling leaves… but life is full of wonders.

Barbie 2017 Calendar Girls —Jan & Feb

Posted by helen on October 16, 2016

Have you ordered the new Barbie 2017 Calendar ? these are the design concept sketches, but Barbie probably wont have these fashions made by Mattel.  I’ll try a few of them just like I did in 2009.

Jan. 2017   Pink Garden Dress with Hat

It took me a week to make this dress.

Feb 2017,  Polka Dot Dress

Polka dots are timeless, this dress is a classic 50s style designed  by Adele Simpson

People often cry out loud for the little purse that Mattel no longer offers, so I have to make one:

the new look of City Chic

Posted by helen on August 4, 2016

She consoles me for all the fun I have missed at 2016 Barbie Convention!

I suppose she is at Andy Warhol’s Gallery Opening

I guess it was a pretty popular style back in 60s:

DIY -Making Popsicle Chairs for Barbie

Posted by helen on March 24, 2016

This year the Barbie Club Fan Members are gifted with a Chiavari (Tiffany) Chair,  I first thought I didn’t have a single extra square inch for chairs, I was going to throw away a couple of chairs of my own to make space in my living room,  but then I thought perhaps I could use chairs as doll stands, since these Made to Move dolls don’t come with stands(sadly, they don’t come with shoes, either)   I immediately thought Popsicle sticks are great materials to use.

I picked 2 packs of Popsicle Sticks in a discount store, they are in different sizes, the prices are the same,  $1.29 each pack. I also bought wood glue.

I used a pair of scissors to cut the popsicle sticks,  it really is NOT  a great tool, very hard to cut,   my right hand now has a big blister, perhaps a mini hacksaw or craft knifes work better, but I don’t have anything else, I only have scissors.

I avoided the “cutting job” to save the pain when I made the table,  so the table size is the Popsicle Size. the scallop edge probably isn’t a realistic look of a dinning table.

I wanted to paint them in other colors, all the hardware stores in my neighborhood have run out of business, the nearest one is 28-minute-walk away (according to google),  I didn’t want to make a trip there. I searched my kitchen cabinets & found an old can of white paint,   the nozzles on can of spray paint has plugged up with dried paint, I tried but was not able to unplug the nozzle tip…   so I poured the paint on the chair –the result is the worst paint job you have ever seen,  it would be nice if I sprayed it evenly with Gold Metallic paint. It really makes myself laugh whenever I look at this ridiculous paint job I have done.

after I made my set,  I also made a mess at home… glue stains, paint stains are everywhere..  I thought “hmmm…. someone who is very organized must have made them  before, probably there are easy-to-make tutorials on youtube,  so I searched, wow, there are plenty of them,  I think this one is the best, check it out if you want to make some chairs:
