who is Mulan wearing?

Posted by helen on August 17, 2010

it bothers me when desginers do not do research when they design costumes for these well-known characters.

Mulan lived in Northern Wei dynasty (386–534). the “Seceret Message Mulan” designed by mattel in 1997 wears a Modern Mandarin dress, the new style was based on Manchu women’s costumes (there are 56 ethnic groups in china, Manchu is one of them), improved by Shanghai Tailors & steamstresses in mid 1920s.

Today, you can hardly see a Chinese woman wear a Mandarin dress. Some restaurants in tourist area use it as their waitress & hostess’ work uniform. Mandarin Dress seems more popular outside China. it certainly is a mistake for a designer to think every chinese woman including Mulan wears Mandarin Dress.

a pic from ebay:

here is a Chinese aritist’s version of “Mulan” (photo credit: http://www.yiyuanyi.org/yc/tpq/200906/05_13650.html )

Mosque near Ground Zero

Posted by helen on August 15, 2010

Quote from Peter King, RNY congressman:
“It is insensitive and uncaring for the Muslim community to build a mosque in the shadow of ground zero…While the Muslim community has the right to build the mosque, they are abusing that right by needlessly offending so many people who have suffered so much … The right and moral thing for President Obama to have done was to urge Muslim leaders to respect the families of those who died and move their mosque away from ground zero. Unfortunately, the president caved into political correctness.”

Leader of Ground Zero Mosque Refuses To Disclose Source Of Funding, no one knows if the funds are from Iran & osama bin laden, it could be another terrorist training camp.

“Barack hussein obama” sounds more like “Blah-lah Insane O’bummer”, who has no hearts, “freedom” means he would support a Hirohito Monument on Pearl Harbor if Japnese communities decide to do so.

Remember the story about “police acted stupidly”? Inviting a stupid police and an idiotic black professor to a beer in white house, O’bummer acted like a leader of street gansters.

since he has flew Air Force one from DC to NYC with his wife O’drama for a Boradway show on Friday Night, we can expcet him to fly Air Force one to NYC again for the grand opening ceremony of the grand Mosque at Ground Zero.

one of the photos from my camera on 911, if you have forgotten what it was like.

what has changed since 911? it’s printed on the back side of our Metro cards:

a rare face

Posted by helen on August 13, 2010

this doll has a rare face mold, “Italy” I sort like this face, if she gets a  modern facial makeover, she would be a striking beauty on the runway:

Arizona immigration law & racial profile

Posted by helen on August 13, 2010

I am tired of hearing some lousy people claim the new arizona immigration law leads to Racial profile.

After 911, NYC police officers have the right to check subway riders’ backpacks.

One day I was carrying a large shopping bag filled with Barbie dolls  after I had a shopping spree at Toys R Us . Police officers stopped me and asked to check my bag before I entered the subway station

its their job and its for Public safety, I had nothing to complain. After they saw all the dolls, they laughed and said my little girl would be so happy, I told them I was the happy one: these dolls were for me–the big girl, not the little girl. I guess I could have played race card if I happened to look like a muslim?

if New Yorkers can bear with the new rules, so can the Arizonians. why make all the  fuss?

say “yes” to the dress

Posted by helen on August 9, 2010

Barbie doll probably is best mannequin for  Bridal dress.

the reality show “say yes to the dress” seems pretty SILLY to me. many of the brides-to-be  have a very tight budget,  so why spending thousands of $$ on the dress that you cant really afford? the credit card debt makes a great contribution to a unhappy marriage. besides, even you have that money, is it the best way to spend it?

you see, this bride loves the dress that’s priced $35,000, I guess that’s 2/3 of her annual salary, maybe  one year of her salary after tax.  Anyway,  she really loves that dress, the entire family is there to make bargains for her, Mom & Dad are great prce negotiators.  the price finally came down to $12,000,  huge price cut,  isnt it?  but, —still too much if you dont really have the cash in your bank account.

a $120 dress probably can  give her  the same look if she really knows how to dress herself.

when it comes to fashion, the price isnt the key, money doenst buy you the best look.
